Dye migration:

Why it happens and how to prevent it

What is dye migration?

a fabric problem, not a print problem


Dye migration happens when the disperse dyes used to colour a polyester (or poly-blend) fabric turn back into a gas under heat, rise up through the printed transfer, and re-deposit themselves in the ink layer. The result is a pink, orange or grey haze over or around the print - sometimes visible the moment the transfer is peeled, sometimes only hours or days later.

Important: 
It isn't a defect in the transfer film or the print itself. It's a chemical reaction between the garment's dye and press heat - which means it has to be prevented before pressing, not fixed after.

Why it happens

five factors that decide the risk


Heat. Disperse dyes sublimate - turn from solid to gas - at a lower temperature than most people expect, often starting around 150-160°C. Any press cycle hot enough to apply the transfer is hot enough to start moving the fabric's own dye.

Fabric colour and dye load. The darker and more saturated the garment, the more dye is available to migrate. Reds, navy and black polyester are the most common culprits.

Fabric composition. 100% polyester and high-polyester blends - sportswear fabrics, 65/35 poly-cotton, performance textiles - carry the highest risk. Migration is rare on 100% cotton, since cotton isn't coloured with disperse dyes.

Press time and pressure. Longer dwell times and higher pressure push more heat into the fabric, giving the dye more energy and more time to sublimate.

Ink opacity. White and other light, opaque areas of a design show migration first and most clearly - there's little pigment there to mask the dye coming through underneath.

Where it shows up

Immediately after pressing - a pink or orange tint appears in white or light areas as soon as the transfer is peeled.

Delayed migration - the print looks clean off the press, but a haze develops hours or days later, especially if the garment was folded, bagged or stacked while still warm.

After washing or drying - heat from a tumble dryer can trigger migration that the heat press alone didn't.

 

How to prevent it

Choose BLOCKER on dark or unfamiliar polyester. A BLOCKER transfer adds an extra barrier layer between the garment and the ink, built specifically to stop sublimated dye from reaching the printed colours. For dark or saturated polyester this is the single most effective safeguard.

Press at the lowest workable temperature and time. Use the shortest, coolest cycle that still gives good adhesion for your transfer type. Every degree and every extra second above what's needed increases migration risk.

Let garments cool flat before handling. Migration often continues while the fabric is still warm. Cool the garment fully - a light cool-down press or a few minutes laid flat - before folding, bagging or stacking it.

Never stack pressed garments warm. Hang or lay them out until they reach room temperature. Stacking warm garments traps heat exactly where it can keep driving dye upward.

Test the actual fabric before a full run. Migration behaviour varies between fabric batches even within the same colour and supplier. A small test press on the real garment tells you more than any spec sheet.

Fabric can behave differently depending on its composition, dyeing, finishing and your press. Before running a full batch on polyester or sublimated fabric:

  1. order BLOCKER samples if the fabric is dark or unfamiliar
  2. perform an application test on the target material
  3. confirm temperature, time and pressure on that test before scaling up


Summary


Dye migration comes from the fabric's own dye, not from the transfer, and it's driven by heat, colour saturation and polyester content. On cotton and colour-stable blends, STANDARD performs normally. On dark or sublimated polyester, switch to BLOCKER, press at the lowest workable settings, and let garments cool flat before handling. Test the specific fabric before running a large order - migration risk can vary even within the same colour.
